The Story Behind the Lodge

Fox and Bear Lodge wasn’t always a bed and breakfast. This colonial home has stood in Sussex County for generations, watching seasons turn and families come and go.

How It Started:

Restoring a house like this takes time—and a clear point of view. It wasn’t gutted and then started over. What mattered was kept: wide-plank floors, exposed beams, and windows that frame views worth lingering over. What today’s travelers wanted was added: plush beds, refreshed baths, and thoughtful extras that make a stay feel effortless.

The result is a retreat rooted in the past and designed for the present. Eight rooms – no two the same. Each one was created to give you space to breathe, think, or do nothing at all.

What We Stand For

No Scripts

We skip the standard check-in process. Need hiking maps? We’ve got them. Want a dinner reservation at the best spot in town? Done. Heading out early for the slopes? No problem. It’s your trip—we’re just here to make it easier.

Small on Purpose

With eight rooms, we can stay hands-on. It means we remember your name, your coffee order, and why you came. When you walk through the door, you’re not a room number—you’re the reason we’re here.

Location Matters

We’re close to what brings you here—skiing, hiking, farms, and wineries—so you can spend more time doing and less time driving. And when you come back, the lodge feels like a true landing place: quiet, cozy, and unmistakably the Skylands.

We don’t have a second thought café, but instead, it is an expansion of the experience itself. We provide you with breakfast to kickstart your day: locally produced, seasonally appropriate menus, and coffee, for which no explanation is needed. It’s all provided at no cost, because it is only right that hospitality extends beyond the front desk.
